The Kern Plateau and the southern Sierra Nevada are not as well known as the rugged High Sierra farther north. The gems found here include not only golden trout and Giant Sequoias but also an enormous diversity of plants and wildlife seldom found in one discrete corner of the Earth. This book is an attempt to help you learn more about:

- The geologic processes that created this spectacular landscape.
- Golden trout, mammals, birds, butterflies, and other wildlife.
- Giant Sequoias, conifer forests, and a remarkable number of wildflowers.
- Stewardship of our public lands.
Joe Fontaine has spent a lifetime exploring these mountains: camping, hiking, backpacking, and flying over every corner of the southern Sierra. His frequent testimony before Congress and visits with key decision makers have contributed to the creation of the Giant Sequoia National Monument and the designation of several wilderness areas including the Golden Trout Wilderness. Joe has been a leader in many environmental organizations including two years as National President of the Sierra Club.
