Summary
The Deep South of the 1940s sets the stage for this heartfelt family adventure. The Walker family of Sugar Grove struggles with life as sharecrop cotton farmers and are due for a break. The break comes when uncle Steve picks up the art of mink trapping on a trip to Canada and brings that skill with him when he returns to Arkansas. This causes a major uproar at the local fur market when the other dirt-poor trappers see these beautiful pelts, but are unable to duplicate the process. As a boy of nine, I want to be a trapper just like my dad. With the help of my dog, Old Trailer, my sisters and I plan to catch enough mink to make mama a fur coat for Christmas. Our hopes are dashed when local thugs steal Old Trailer, sending me into a deep depression and sending my dad and his friends into the swamps of Louisiana searching for him.
