Summary

The main focus of this book is to provide guidance and a model to parents, educators, religious institutions, social service agencies, neighborhood and community groups, fraternal organizations, penal institutions, and other organizations that interact with African-American males, on ways to inspire them to become a success as adults. Additionally, because it is solution oriented and emphasizes what can be done, this guide can be utilized by serious, mature Black males, high school age and older to aid in their growth and/or development. The book highlights six criteria that were found to impact African-American males move toward successful development. The are: 1) religious, spiritual, and ideological orientation; 2) positive mental attitude; 3) following the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles) emphasized in the African-American celebration of Kwanzaa; 4) knowledge of African and African-American culture and history; 5) social development; and 6) social capacity.

About the Author

Darryl Tukufu, a husband, father, sociologist, ordained minister, entrepreneur, and community leaders has served effectively in numerous positions with organizations throughout the United States. He was involved in the Black cultural nationalist and Urban League movements, and has received recognition for his advocacy and service to youth. He has served as Pres/CEO of non-profit groups, a professor and administrator at universities, a manager of departments of government, and is a life member of the NAACP and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He received his A.B. degree from Youngstown State University, and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Akron, and a Doctorate of Ministry degree from Jacksonville Theological Seminary. He is credited with the following motivational raps: "Tukufu's Rap" and "The Grandfather's Rap." He has published other books, co-authored a chapter in a psychology textbook, and articles on social change.
