Summary

Just as Clovis and his bodyguard arrived, an Asian girl the size of a sprite burst from the ranks. She lit emergency roadside flares and smoke bombs and tossed them into the street. Hissing scarlet smoke created a haunting scene of defiance. Clovis halted his bodyguard with the raising of his right hand. He peered through the smoke. He looked for Leon, but wound up counting the people who had aligned against him. As he craned his neck and squinted, a tall, slender figure stepped through the ruby fumes. She planted her feet and tilted her head with the Hellenic grace of Athena. Powdered gaunt was her face. Her lips, where an unlit cigarette dangled, were painted purple as ripe plums. Her onyx hair was oiled and combed tight to her scalp, and in the back it was twisted into twin braids that protruded from behind her ears like boar's tusks. She wore a black sweat suit with the left leg pushed up to the knee and black combat boots. Her nails were painted black, and on her wrist was a thick leather bracelet lined with sharpened steel spikes. She glared at him from behind a pair of gangster shades. A diagonal shadow sliced across her face as she pulled the sweat suit's hood up over her head. Punk wench, vampire, or angel of death, Clovis could not tell.
