The Young Adults’ Guide to the History of Money is an easy-to-read student reference compiled by author and teacher Kristi Thomason-Carroll. This book details the current U.S. minting of coins and the production and use of the Federal Reserve dollar, while explaining the role of:
- Bartering, the use of trade without money, which originated with the first civilizations and continues—to some extent—today.
- Coinage, the birth of modern coinage began in 500 BC in Lydia. The earliest versions of these coins were made from electrum, an alloy of gold and silver.
- Currency, the first mention of paper money is found in bills and receipts dating from the early Babylonians in 2500 BC.
- Money today: checks, credit cards, and electronic financing, valuable new forms of money that our ancestors could only imagine.
